In this time the use
of these horoscopes differ then from what they do today, kings would use
Astrology to predict wars and their outcomes and even what their children were
destined for in life. The belief today is followed by many along these same lines with a few slight differences.
Although many read horoscopes they do not do so as fortune tellers for
war or their destiny of what they will grow to become but to find a meaning to their life and which
personalities are relevant to their astrological symbol. Some followers even take this advice and put
it to daily use. Does this mean that although we do not view
it as magic, could these followers today have similar beliefs that the
astrological symbols play some kind of supernatural role in their lives similar
to astrological magic?

Astrology, then and now.
As I read Keickhefer I became very interested in the ideas
presented on the subject of Astrology in the middle ages. One thing that always would come to mind upon
hearing of fortune telling and horoscopes is that many people still to this day
focus on the same principles. As stated
in Keichefer (120) “the most basic use of astrology was in making horoscopes,
which would indicate the influence that the stars and planets had on a person
at birth or at any other juncture in life.”

I like the reference between then and now. it is surprising that most of what we read we think to ourselves "How could they believe that back then?" As we know now magic is not real but back then it was a common understanding that magic was real. And yet today we still have people who believe in superstition and karma and yet that is perfectly reasonable to believe in.
ReplyDeleteI feel like the then and now comparison is very important when we look at magic. Because people still believe in astrology we need to keep it all in perspective. Another thing to keep in mind is that we always talk about things that we dont understand but assume make sense just like they did with superstition and magic.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely think that there people who believe the astrological events effect the how their lives will play out or what personalities they should have. some people very connect to their astrological symbol element and believe it is an excuse or cause for their character. I think this is one of the few forms of magic that we still view in modern times.
