The Simplicity of a Singing Bone

I think this may be my favorite Fairy Tale. Not because it is short, but because the first half is almost completely irrelevant. There is a magical spear and a weird dwarf-thing in the first part, but that doesn't matter at all. What matters is that because of the first part, the second part happens, and the second part is this random dude finding a bone, trying to blow it like a whistle, and hearing it sing about the person who murdered the guy that the bone belonged to. There’s a minor religious angle to this in that part of the reason for the singing bone seems to be that “nothing is hidden from the eyes of God”, so justice needs to be able to be done, but that’s it. The bone sings, and justice is done. It’s short, sweet, and to the point. What's your favorite of the Not-Rumpelstiltskin Fairy Tales? ---

  1. First, I liked "The Singing Bone's" too. I thought for as dark and disturbing as it was, it was actually a beautiful story.

Second, to answer your question, my favorite story is "Briar Rose". I liked the magical element with the 12 women. It also kind of reminded me of being little and having party, and having to invite the entire class so no one felt left out. The one not invite clearly felt left out, and that is where the curse came from. The other part I liked of this story was the Prince, and how he went to wake up the Princess, but the 100 year curse was up that day anyway, so his kiss could have been entirely pointless.

  2. I love Child of Mary. It's a story that not many people of because it's really dark and was taken out of later versions (how hipster of me, right?). Anyways, it's about this little girl who lives in pain and poverty but then she gets taken to heaven by an angel. So, her life is good and happy for a while. But then, one day Mary has to go off and do...Angel things I guess and gives the little girl 13 keys. There are 13 doors in heaven and she is permitted to open the doors except for the 13th. Behind all the other doors are amazing things. After opening 12 of the doors, curiosity overwhelms her and she opens the 13th door. (What the girl see's varies by version). Behind the door she sees the bodies of virgins that have been torn apart. There's blood everywhere. When Mary gets back, she knows what the girl did so she kickes her out of heaven.
